There is a captivating background to the Cambodia casinos that sit just over the border from nearby Thailand, in which gambling den gaming is banned. Eight casinos are situated in a generally tiny area in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia gambling dens is in a prime location, a three to 4 hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 largest gambling locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a thriving business with Thai workers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The astonishing income accrued from the casinos ranges from seven and a half million dollars to more than 12.5 million, and there are a few limitations constraints for casino ownership. Ownership is presumed to be largely Thai; however, financing sources are ambiguous. The borders are ceremoniously open from 09:00 to 1700, and though visas are for all intents and purposes necessary to pass, there are methods and means around this, as is correct of most border crossings.

The first Cambodia gambling dens opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving only one gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored boat gambling hall, features one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and sixty tables. The Naga gambling hall is open all hours with 42 tables of mini-baccarat banque, four tables of twenty-one, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The original casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly followed. There are 150 slot machines and five table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slots and 68 table games at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 slots and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slots and 96 table games, including eighty seven baccarat chemin de fer (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 one armed bandits and 66 of the familiar gaming tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight casinos in Poipet, again a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machine games and ninety seven games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an international vacation and hotel building that highlights many luxuries in addition to the gambling hall, which offers 10,000 square feet of one hundred and thirty one armed bandits and eighty eight gaming tables.
